Hi, I’m Rick Steves. Back with more of the best of Europe. This time we return to the Czech Republic for a close up look at Prague, the hottest city in Eastern Europe.It is amazing what a few years of freedom can do.Prague is always been beautiful now it’s fun too. The streets are filled with young people who seem which determined to make up for their parents stolen their childhoods. We’ll explore Prague. Slinky with art nouveau facades. Perpetually playing Mozart and Vivaldi and brewing the best beer in Europe.We will see Europe’s most interesting jewish quarter. Prague’s in love with life, Light Charles Bridge and it’s unique clack light theatre after the classy street music.We’ll venture into the Czech countryside to tour a Silver mine and check out some bony decor.The Czech Republic, a quick and easy side trip from western Europe, is the western half of what was Czechoslovakia. It’s about the size of Mariland. From Prague we side trip to ‘’Kutna Hora’’.Prague is the capital of Czech Republic. Since it scaped the bombs of last century’s war, it’s one of Europe’s best preserved cities. It’s nickname: the golden city of a hundred spires.Until about 1800, Prague was four separate and hortified towns, each straddling the ‘’Ultava River’’.The castle town, for a thousand years the home of the Czech ruler.The Little town, where nobles would live to be close to the king.The old town, with it’s magnificent market square.And the new town, with the grand Wenceslas Square providing a stage for this country’s tumultuous 20th century history.After a generation under communist control the city is bursting with pent up entrepreneurial energy, even the buildings like this one ‘’the dancing house’’ seems to celebrate Czech freedom. Under capitalism, Prague is flouring with inviting restaurants and vibrant markets. Today, as it has since medieval times, Prague’s central market keeps both hungry locals and vagabonds well fed.-‘’ Every time I come to Prague my tour guide friend Lida tries to teach me a little more Czech.’’-You have known me fourteen years and you still speak no Czech (not a word). I will show you some words. I'm next heading to the quaint historic city of Kilkenny. Now Kilkenny is an interesting case study for how a location can establish itself on a tourism map. In the mid 1960's Kilkenny became based by the Kilkenny Design workshops. The semi state body brought about to proper the good craft design in Ireland. The workshops were set up in the stables and coach houses of the impressive Kilkenny castle. In the mid 1980 s the design workshops were privatised and in an interesting twist of fate was taken over by former employee Kathleen Moran. Kathleen Moran 'I worked for the original company Kilkenny Design at workshops and that was a great experience and it was privatised I saw the opportunity to maybe to put in a bin to become and have my own business. I was just an employee so I didn't have any money but I had a friendly bank manager and I worked on him and I was very fortunate that he gave me the funds and I took a risk but I had a great fate in the product and the place. When I took over in the mid 1980's we would have had 5 or 6 staff. We now have over 30 staff, we would have had 14 or 15 pottery companies we now have up to 200 suppliers all over Ireland. We have extended the square footage of the shops maybe twice the amount and put in a fantastic restaurant upstairs overlooking the castle with beautiful old beams. So, we have put a lot of investment in but we have done it very much true to the integrity of the building'. NarratorKilkenny is now well established as Ireland's craft capital. This has a flow on effect to other local business; the constant influx of tourists means Kilkenny boasts some of Ireland's finest restaurants and an accommodation. Kathleen believes a lot of Kilkenny's charm also comes from the fact the city has maintained its historic link to the days when it was a medieval merchant town.Kathleen We, the rest of Ireland were pulling down there lovely old shops fronts and putting up very modern plastic ones. Kilkenny were retaining all of theirs and they were retaining and making sure that the locals retained things that linked us to our past and heritage and that was something we should be proud of, where the bigger cities is were modernising. Kilkenny has modernised but has managed to retain wonderful shop fronts, the old lane ways so that has been very good for Kilkenny. There is something wonderful about hand made product, a product that's seen through right from the beginning to the end by the same person. I think people are kind of going to suffer from chain store fatigue or fatigue from seeing the same thing. No matter what country you go to now you see the same product. What's wonderful about Irish craft is how unique and how different it is and how beautifully made it is and we have a very high standard of craft in Ireland across of different areas and I think that is something very special that we have in Ireland. It is something, that I think the wheel will come full circle and people are going to come back to things that are made with tradition ..

London, British’s capital city and home to some of the world most famous tourist attraction. The houses of Parlament, in Westmister. It’d been the home of governament since medieval times. BigBen is probably the best known clock tower in the world. But the name “BigBen” actually refers to the massive bell it has to inside. Next door to the houses of Parlament is to the Westminster Abbey, sight of every royal coronation since 1066. Much of the current building is over 700 years old. Just across the river from Westminster is one of the cities most modern estructures, the London Eye. Standing it 135 metres tall lis the world’s largest observation view. Since the dawnof New Millenium, it’s become britains most pupilar paid for visitor attraction, with views across London stretching for miles. Nearby is the west end famous for its Shopping and night life. Regent Street, Bond Street are home to leading fashion names as well as some very exclusives stores. There are plenty of great photo opportunities. Covent Garden used to be a fruit and vegetalbes market. Now it’s an open X with bistros, boutiques and bars, a great place to rest your feet from all that shopping. The west end comes alive at night though more so in theatre land around X avenue. Here there are nearly 50 theatres and the widest Choice of stage productions anywhere in the world. Over in the east end colomia road is famous for its morning flower market, and boutiques while X fields market is great if you are looking for fresh food and some clothes bargains. And X is the home of the great british curry. And at X is the city, the oldest area of London, but also it’s comercial part with some stunning modern architecture. The swiss re bulding of Gherkin is one of the cities newest landmarks, and has allready become popular film location. Here there are also some of the best views of River Thames. From the classic landmark Tower Bridge, to one of its newest. The millenium bridge which leads from St Paul’s catedral on one side to the Tate Modern gallery on the other. It all makes London one of the most varied tourist destinations in the wold.

Lying lazily on a bend of the Macon river, and in great contrast with its lively neighbor Thailand, which spreads beyond the opposite shore, the city of Vientiane is the peaceful capital of sleepy Laos. This big monument, built in 1960, and inspired by the arch of triumph, in Paris, was erected with American funds which were given to the city to build an airport. But the heart and core of the nation is That Luan, the great golden stupa. Moving north from the capital city the country is soon dominated by mountain chains, with peaks that reach a height of 2800m. Before completely entering the maze of rugged mountains, lies the peaceful town of Van Vieng, one of the main tourist destinations of Laos. Its fame among travelers is not undeserved, since the town lies in a beautiful valley, cultivated with rice and vegetables, and surrounded by impressive and mighty limestone mountains. A little north of Van Vieng, the countryside becomes even more spectacular, with huge limestone peaks rising from the valleys, almost as if they are warning the visitors of the inhospitable mountains lying ahead. Over the centuries, these mountainous regions have become the home of nomadic tribes migrating from Tibet to China. As a result of their geographical isolation, these people have preserved their ancient traditions. Hanoi, the peaceful capital city of the socialist republic of Vietnam. Still conveys a small town feeling, despite of its population of 3.5 million. The most impressive and well known natural marvel of Vietnam, is the immense Ha Long Bay. Only a few hours drive from Hanoi, it is one of the main tourist attractions of the country. Ha Long is also the location of one of the James Bond movies, but as the Vietnamese government didn't release the necessary permits, the shooting was done in Southern Thailand. The hills of Tam Cock, situated south of Hanoi, have similar origins to Ha Long's islands. Here, rock formations rise from the rice fields instead of emerging from the sea, thus giving life to an enchanting mystical atmosphere. To the eye of the stranger these pictures could look like a reptile show. In fact, it is a restaurant whose specialty is snake. Buddhism has molded the culture of the peoples of Vietnam for thousands of years. Mass pilgrimages, to sites of particular religious importance, take place on a regular basis. .
