Once when I was having a driving class, I saw an UFO crossing the sky.
It was in the afternoon and my driving instructor was next to me. We were waiting for a red light to come green when we suddenly saw it. It was like a green fireball crossing the sky! And like a shooting star, it suddenly disappeared.

Once, when I was coming home, I got trapped in a elevator that was going up and down all the time. I was very scared. I tried to call the technician, buy my phone didn't have money, so I got even more nervous. Finally, I asked to Movistar for money and I called the technician who took me out of there.

I’m thinking of somebody. Try to guess who:

He was born on October, 2nd 1890, in New York City.
He was an American comedian and film star best known for his great sense of humor.
He did a lot of funny films, being always accompanied by his brothers.
Unfortunately, he left us in 1977 at Los Angeles, California. I think that he’s now looking at us and having fun about the people who wear his face as a mask in costume parties.

I’m sure that you know who’s the man I’m talking about, but I’ll give you another clue:
His two brothers Harpo and Chico were difficult to recognize out of the cameras without their costumes, but it was IMPOSSIBLE to recognize our man without his round glasses, his bushy eyebrows and his fake mustache!

Once, when I was swimming, I nearly drown.

I don't remember what happened because I was 2 years old but my oncle has told me.

I was in my aunt's house where there's a swimming pool and all my family were having lunch. Suddenly I dissapeared and they found me in the bottom of the pool.

Fortunately my oncle rescued me and today I'm still alive!

Once, when I was visiting Paris with my friends, a curious thing happend.
All my friends and I were visiting the most important monuments in Paris and we were queued in the Eiffel Tower.. Suddenly, about us a chinese tourist began to dance. Everybody laughted at her and the poor chinese didn't realize. Moreover, I imitated her and my friends couldn't stop laughing.

Once, when I was going to my house in Bristol, I got lost with the bus. It was dark at night,

I didn't know where I was and suddenly when I looked at my mobile phone, I realised that it had

no battery.

Finally, the bus driver helped me a lot because he left me in front of my house.

Once when I was walking down the street, I bumped into a streetlight.

I suddenly noticed a friend of mine was on the opposite side of the street.  I tried in vain to catch her attention yelling her name, and due to that I stopped looking ahead. Unfortunately, I ran into that streetlight and some people burst out laughing.

Once, when I was shopping I got caught on the escalator.


I was going up on the escalator when I suddenly couldn't move because my shoelace was caught on the step. Many people were watching me but no one helped me, so at the end I pulled the shoelace to me and I finally released myself.

Once when I was walking on my way to school I had a “funny” fall into a drain.

On the street where I live the road surface had just been tarmacked and because of this it was completely black. I was humming carefree when suddenly I fell down a dark hole which was an uncovered and, luckily, dry drain. I was hanging on my backpack. Since this day I always keep an eye on my feet.

Grammar focus: Use of past simple and continuous.

Instructions: Write a short personal anecdote

(number of words: 50-60).
An anecdote is a short, entertaining account of some happening, usually personal or biographical.
Begin with a sentence using the pattern “Once when I was …-ing, I found/lost/saw …”. Then explain the circumstances/complicating events surrounding the first sentence (Who? When? Where? Why?...). Finally, write an appropriate ending.
