Ana Marqués' anecdote

Once, when I was saving the lives of hundreds of people in a marginal village of South America, a group of guerrilla got into my camp and kidnapped me. They caught me and covered my eyes, I was put in a jeep or a car like that and they took me away. My companions decided to call the Spanish Consulate and they negotiated the price of my ransom.

After paying a big amount of money, my kidnappers set me free.

when I was saving the lives of hundreds of people --> I was helping people / was working in a refugee camp ...(the problem here is not the grammar...)
